Engagement Session Attire & Other Recommendations
My first recommendation is to always wear something that you are comfortable in! If you are not comfortable, it will show in the portrait. Below are more recommendations!
- Wear clothes that are complementary in style and color. For example, you could both wear fall colors or both wear different shades of blue. Just don't be too matchy.
- Darker colors are slimming and they are also easier to photograph. But if you have something white or off white, don't be afraid to wear it, just don't wear clothes that are too bright!
- Stay away from patterns. The background usually has enough texture that patterns can sometimes make the photographs too busy.
- Have the clothes match the location and season for the shoot. Shorts and flip flops are not the best on a cold day. This goes back to being comfortable, if you are not warm, it’s harder to look warm and happy!
- Wear clothes that are the same level of dressiness. Don’t dress up when everyone else is wearing everyday street clothes.
- Having your hair done professionally for your session is fun but please do not use it to practice your ‘wedding do’. Most wedding hair styles are far to formal for en engagement session.
- Leave your purse behind. It is a lot easier to move around in between poses and locations when you don’t have to worry about where to put your purse.
- If you want to include your dog in a few of the poses it is fine, location allowing of course! I do recommend that you have a friend along to watch him while we move around and take other poses that do not include your dog.
- Plan on having a good time. Think of it more like a date, and less of smiling to the camera.
Other things to consider - If you exclusively wear glasses, they should be part of your portrait. If you wear contacts some of the time, please feel free to wear them for your session. If you wear glasses, I will control the reflections to the best of my ability by adjusting your pose, but sometimes it’s impossible to completely eliminate glasses glare. If you have thick lenses or have had severe reflection problems in the past, you may want to ask your optometrist to loan you a frame with no lenses for your session.
- Jewelry should be kept simple, wide gold and silver necklaces may cause an excessive glare.
- You want to look your best, so pay a little extra attention to your grooming before your portrait session. If anyone needs a fresh haircut, have it done about a week ahead. Also, It is best to wear your hair is a style that you are have done before and are comfortable with. Please do not try out a new hair style for your session.
- Men, if you have an afternoon or evening appointment , you may want to shave mid-day to avoid the “five o’clock shadow” look. If you wear a beard or mustache, they should be neatly trimmed.
- Turtlenecks or v-necks are flattering provided that neither is exaggerated in style (avoid deep v-necks).
- Apply make-up as you normally would. A little extra all-over foundation, that matches your skin tone, with mascara and a touch of lip color is recommended (If you are not wearing bright colored clothing, a bright lip color can add a fun pop). Feel free to bring along a lip gloss for touch ups or a small compact of powder to eliminate any shine. I can carry something small for you while we work.
- For an outdoor session, hairspray is our friend! Considering the wind, even a little bit of finishing hairspray can eliminate wild fly-a-ways.
- It's always a good idea to take a lint roller to your clothing prior to leaving for your session, but especially if you have hairy pets at home. I of course can 'post-edit' out lint and small hairs, it will just add more time till you get to see your images!
